There is a lot of conversation and research currently happenning that addresses Inclusion in Early Childhood and Care settings. Inclusion is about belonging and engaging in a diverse society and creating an environment in which all children can participate and succeed.
What is Inclusion?
Inclusion is taking into account ALL children’s social, cultural and linguistic diversity, including learning styles, abilities, disabilities, gender, family circumstances and geographic location to ensure ALL children’s experiences are recognized and valued. It is creating a community where each member feels included and supported. That is the essence of Flutterbys Philosophy. Inclusion is not possible without diversity and a welcoming ethos.
Who benefits from Inclusion?
Research shows that Inclusion benefits ALL. Children and families of children with additional needs and without additional needs benefit academically and socially from interacting and participating in inclusive settings. (ECIA 2016 National Guidelines)
According to Noggle & Stites (2018) children who are typically developing are more likely to develop a positive attitude towards people with disabilities, more likely to increase their factual knowledge of certain disabilities, display less fear and uncertainty when encountering a person whom the child may view as different, and be more knowledgeable about assisting their peers. In inclusive settings Diversity becomes the norm.
